Accessibility statement

Last updated: October 20, 2026

We want everyone to be able to play backgammon with us, including people with disabilities. The site is a private project with no income, but we still work on its accessibility and keep improving it.

The standard

We're working to make the site conform to Israeli Standard IS 5568, "Web content accessibility guidelines", at level AA (based on the W3C's WCAG guidelines). Currently the site partially conforms to the standard — details under "Known limitations".

What we've done

  • The site is in Hebrew, right to left, and also in English and Arabic (the button at the top). Headings and regions are marked.
  • Text color contrast on the main screens meets WCAG AA, in both light and dark mode.
  • The game is fully playable from the keyboard: moving between points with the arrows, choosing a checker and destination, and shortcuts for rolling, ending the turn, undo and doubling.
  • Screen readers get announcements about what's happening in the game and about the point the cursor is on.
  • In dialogs: focus moves into the dialog and stays there, Esc closes it, and focus returns to where it was.
  • There's a "No animations" setting, and the site respects the system's reduced-motion setting. You can turn off sounds.
  • The layout adapts to phones, and you can enlarge the text in your browser.

Known limitations

  • The board is a graphic drawing. You can play it with a screen reader, but the experience is still basic.
  • The site has a few decorative animations (you can turn them off in settings).
  • The chart in game analysis is visual; next to it are tables and a text summary.
  • We haven't yet tested the site with users of assistive technologies — we'd welcome help.

Keyboard shortcuts

  • Tab — Move between the buttons and to the board
  • Arrows — On the board: move between the points, the bar and the bear-off tray
  • Enter — On the board: move the checker by the active die, or move a selected checker to this point
  • Space — On the board: select a checker and hear where it can go
  • R — Roll the dice
  • E — End the turn
  • U — Undo the last move
  • S — Switch the active die
  • D — Double
  • H — Move hint (vs the computer and on one screen)
  • B — Go to the board
  • Esc — Close a window or cancel a checker selection

Ran into a problem?

We'd be glad to hear about it and fix it. Accessibility coordinator: Dor, dorssg8@gmail.com. So we can help, write what you tried to do, on which page, and which device, browser and assistive technology you used. If something isn't accessible to you, we'll also try to find another way to do it.

Physical accessibility arrangements

We have no office and don't receive the public. The service is provided online only.
